Compressor Flooded Start Migration Mitigation

Field Status: Refrigerant migration occurs naturally during the off-cycle. Because refrigerant vapor is strongly attracted to refrigeration oil and seeks the coldest point in the system, it condenses directly inside the compressor crankcase. On startup, this liquid flashes violently, washing oil from precision bearing profiles and scoring internal assemblies.

Preventing flooded starts requires maintaining a distinct thermal boundaries. Electric crankcase heaters keep the oil oil temperature significantly higher than the system saturated temperature equivalent, ensuring any traveling refrigerant vapor remains gas and cannot condense into the oil sump reservoir.

The Vapor Pressure Condensation Law

According to the physics of vapor pressure equilibria, a closed system containing saturated components will experience mass migration toward the location with the lowest vapor pressure. Because refrigeration oils exhibit lower pure vapor pressures than clean refrigerants, they generate a strong chemical attraction vector. When the compressor shell cools down during an off-cycle, it drops beneath the saturation threshold. Vapor migrating from the warm indoor evaporator transforms directly into liquid inside the oil sump, waiting to vaporize expansively when startup pressure reductions drop across the shell assembly.

Sump Temperature Delta Above Ambient Lubrication Sump Profile Corrective Field Action Protocol
0.0°F - 5.0°F Critical Liquid Flooding / Washout Heater element open or unpowered. Turn off power, verify resistance, check contactor aux contacts, and replace assembly.
5.1°F - 19.0°F Degraded Sump Superheat Loose heater strap or improper element sizing. Clean the housing shell surface and wrap the strap securely.
20.0°F - 40.0°F Optimized Protective Envelope Ideal operational specification. Sump oil holds a clean vapor barrier preventing liquid accumulation.
> 40.0°F Excessive Thermal Baking Oversized heater or faulty control logic loop. Monitor for premature chemical breakdown of the lubricant base.

Diagnostic Gateway Challenge

When a compressor undergoes a flooded start due to migration, why does the sight glass on the side of the crankcase show violent foaming instead of a clean oil level indicator?
