Efficient cooling relies on Aisle Containment. By physically partitioning the “cold” aisles (server air intake) from the “hot” aisles (heat rejection), you allow for higher setpoints on the CRAH (Computer Room Air Handler) units, drastically increasing the chiller plant’s economizer hours.
Aisle Physics: The Bypass Air Problem
Bypass air—the air that flows through cable cutouts or rack openings without touching the server—is “wasted” cooling capacity. It returns to the CRAH unit at a lower temperature, artificially inflating the CRAH return air setpoint and tricking the system into thinking the room is colder than it is.
