Single-Phase Motor Run Capacitor Bench Testing
A capacitor does not have to be completely dead to destroy a compressor. A run capacitor that has drifted just 10% below its nominal rating will cause the motor’s auxiliary winding to pull excessive amperage, generating extreme internal heat that chemically degrades the motor’s winding insulation over time.
Capacitor Functional Profiles
Always discharge a capacitor across its terminals with a high-wattage bleed resistor before applying your multimeter. Testing a charged capacitor will instantly blow the internal fuse of your meter.
| Capacitor Type | Operating Principle | Failure Symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Run Capacitor | Stays in circuit permanently to provide continuous torque. | High amp draw, motor runs hot, “humming” on startup. |
| Start Capacitor | Drops out of circuit via relay. Provides massive starting torque. | Violent starting noise, blown fuses, fluid leaking from casing. |
| Dual Run | Three terminals (HERM, FAN, C). Drives two separate motors. | Compressor runs but fan does not (or vice versa). |
Diagnostic Gateway Challenge
You test a 45 µF run capacitor on a condenser fan motor. The meter reads 36 µF. The customer asks you to leave it because the air conditioner “still sounds like it’s running fine.” Should you replace it?
