True to its name, CoolBot itself is a robot-like device that we can use to connect with Wi-Fi. Sometimes, CoolBots don’t need to connect to Wi-Fi as long as they can help to control the aircon’s temperatures.

We’ll dig deeper on all about CoolBots before we see how they can match some aircon brands. In the end, we’ll compare the CoolBot and the CoolBot Pro in terms of their performances.

What is CoolBot

Kate and Ron Khosla were the people behind CoolBot. They created CoolBot due to their difficulties in seeking affordable options of walk-in coolers. CoolBot is most well-known for its micro-controller brain with attached multi-sensors that work with broad ranges of AC products.

The everyday air conditioner tends to support people’s need to chill down inside their rooms. The CoolBot’s presence enhances this default mode that the AC already has. The result is that the CoolBot can transform any room with great insulation systems into a walk-in cooler.

On average, these cooling devices cost around US$300-US$500 per unit that excludes the shipping costs. Some CoolBot prices can even go up to US$1,200 per unit. These prices depend on the features that the CoolBot has, such as the ability to connect with Wi-Fi.

What AC units work with CoolBot

This one is the point that we’ve been waiting for so long: “What air conditioners work with CoolBot?” Generally, if you want to connect your CoolBot with your AC, your AC should have a digital display and automatic restart to match CoolBot’s interfaces.

CoolBots are not compatible with central, RV, or roof-mount-typed ACs. It is also incompatible with PTACs. Many portable AC units can’t connect to CoolBots, unless the portable AC is a dual hose unit, can adjust to the temperature range of 11.67-15.56 degrees Celcius, and from the Whynter brand.

So, if your AC types belong to any of these, bad news – better that you change to a more compatible one, such as window air conditioners. Again, the brand matters when determining what air conditioners work with CoolBot.

Does CoolBot work with mini splits

Mini splits are the AC types that are unlike traditional ACs that produce cold air at only one point and transmit the air through large-sized ducts. You don’t need ducts to make mini split ACs work.

There is good and bad news on answering the question that asks if CoolBot works with mini splits. The good news is that mini split AC units are among the compatible AC types for CoolBots apart from window air conditioners. The bad news is that not every mini split ACs matches the technology that CoolBot possesses.

For example, CoolBot doesn’t work on mini split ACs that have built-in compressors. Panasonic, Fedders, Midea, Toshiba, and Electrolux air conditioners are among those mini split ACs that are “big no” to the CoolBot.

What mini split works best with CoolBot

Now that we know the mini split AC units that fall into the “big no” lists of CoolBot compatibility, what about the brands that work effectively with CoolBot?

LG, Mitsubishi, and Fujitsu are among the three brands that CoolBot companies provide the most support for the mini split units. At some points, CoolBot also supports air conditioner products from Samsung and Daikin, given that the users use them at more than 7 degrees Celcius on a routine basis.

Some users use AC brands that don’t fall into the “big no” categories to pair with CoolBot, and they work. In such situations, the company is willing to support the installation sessions, yet, they can’t guarantee their support will work.

How to install CoolBot to your mini split air conditioner

CoolBot has two versions, the original CoolBot, and the CoolBot Pro. The CoolBot Pro can either use Wi-Fi or not. The CoolBot Pro that doesn’t use Wi-Fi connectivity will operate the same as the original CoolBot. On the other side, you need to set up the Wi-Fi through your device’s browser when using the Wi-Fi-powered CoolBot Pro.

Before you mount the CoolBot, make sure you plug in the cables on relevant ports. Then, cut the power source of your AC units to find the primary temperature sensor. This sensor is the one that doesn’t touch the copper pipes.

Next, free the sensor. Place the CoolBot HEATER cable and bundle them in the same direction until you can find and free the secondary temperature sensor of your aircon.

All of the compatible AC brands have primary and secondary sensors. The sensor placements and other parts are the things that make them different. For example, LG’s primary sensors are tricky because sometimes they hide behind a plastic cover.

Use one layer of electrical tape or a wire tie to connect the secondary temperature sensor with the outer part of the aluminum foil. After that, find the “Fins”-labeled port in your CoolBot device, take the sensor, and pinch it lightly.

Lastly, turn on your mini split, set it on the “Cool” mode and the fan to the “High” speed. Don’t forget to adjust your CoolBot’s temperature ranges so it can match with the AC’s and the room’s temperatures.

How to hook up a coolbot to an air conditioner

Follow the steps below to guide you through the process involved in connecting a Coolbot to an air conditioner. 

  1. Once your air conditioner is fully installed, get all your CoolBot components ready for installation.
  2. Mount the Coolbox alongside your A/C unit with 2 screws; take care not to mount directly under the air conditioner to avoid water dripping into your coolbox.
  3. Uninstall the temperature sensor usually located on the forepart of the A/C fins and detach the plastic clip.
  4. Place the A/C sensor and the red heater sensor beside each other and join them together using the factory-fitted aluminum foil.
  5. Locate the heater jack and plug in the heater cable.
  6. Separate the fins by using a pencil to push between the two fins within approximately 1 inch away from the bottom of the A/C.
  7. Choose either of the two temperature sensors and slide it with the blue cable that has a black tip in between the fins to replace the pencil.
  8. Hold the fins near the sensor tip in place by squeezing it.
  9. Route the sensors cables to make it easy to replace the unit’s front grill without pinching them.
  10. Locate the fins jack and plug in the temperature sensor.
  11. Connect the 2nd temperature sensor and the blue cable with a black tip in the room jack.
  12. See to it that the sensor is hanging freely in the cooler without coming in contact with anything.
  13. Connect the power jack and the power supply.
  14. Make sure that the cables are well organized by making use of twist ties: careful enough not to place the heater joined with foils in the front of the aircon fins.
  15. Detach and discard the filter that comes with the A/C.
  16. Route the cable and fit the cover to the front of the a/c in line with the manufacturer’s instruction.
  17. Leave the cover off for each cleaning.
  18. Plug the power supply into the electrical outlet.

How cold can a CoolBot get

If your room is well-insulated, a CoolBot’s presence can make your AC units run at 25% lower temperatures than usual. At some points, this device can operate at minus degrees without having to freeze the room.

However, we recommend you adjust the CoolBot’s temperature ranges to around 1-18 degrees Celcius. Even though the CoolBot can go as low as 0 degrees Celcius and below, we won’t recommend you to do so. The lower temperatures you set for your CoolBot, the more likely it breaks down. Hence, there are still possibilities for your rooms to freeze.

Why is my Coolbot not cooling?

If your Coolbot is not cooling, it is mostly a result of improper placement of some components during connection. Check below for details.

Room sensor (it can be easily identified by either blue or black can’t that has a black tip)

  1. Check whether the room sensor is touching the cold surface. If it is, readjust the room sensor in such a way that it will hang freely in the cooler without touching any surfaces.
  2. It can also be because of the Error message displayed on the screen. You can remedy this by disconnecting the room sensor cable from the socket and reconnecting it back to the port after some minutes.

Fins sensor (it can also be recognized with a black or blue cable with a black tip)

  1. Check whether the fins sensor is rubbing against the cooling pipe. If it is touching the cooling pipe reinsert the fins sensor in such a way that it will be a quarter deep between the 2nd and the lowest from the lowest parallel cooling pipes, ensuring that the fin is only touching the fins and not the cooling pipes.
  2. Also, you can see Ef or Er flashing on the screen. You can correct this by disconnecting the fins sensor cable and reconnecting it back into the fins spot.

Heat cable (usually the one with the red tip)

  • When the heating cable and A/C sensor are not making good contact. This can be corrected by ensuring that the nub on the heater cable is joined to the A/C sensor’s nub on the tip. Make sure they are tightly joined and pointed towards a similar direction.
  • When the heater is not warming up.

CoolBot vs CoolBot Pro

CoolBot Pro can appear as if they are more superior to CoolBots. After all, some CoolBot Pros can connect to Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi connectivity that some CoolBot Pros have permits more control to the users.

For example, users can adjust the CoolBot Pros’ temperatures even if they’re far from the aircon units. We won’t likely find such practicalities in every day’s CoolBots, in particular, if the CoolBots’ placements are out of our height’s reach.

Nonetheless, CoolBot Pro has its’ disadvantage compared to CoolBots. Since some of the CoolBot Pros connect to Wi-Fi, we need to set up the connectivity first. Failing to do so can affect the entire installation steps. Another thing that we should remember is that the Wi-Fi-powered CoolBot Pro can only support 4G/LTE connectivities.

How to set up Coolbot pro

  1. Connect each cable into its corresponding labeled port usually at the base of the cool to pro, leaving only the data cable.
  2. Mount the Coolbot pro next to your a/c unit.
  3. The factory fitted filter is not to be used, detach it from the AC.
  4. Locate the a/c main temperature sensor and leave it freely hanging.
  5. Position the coolbot heater cable close to the aircon’s main temperature sensor with a  two Square piece of aluminum foil. Wrap and hold them tightly with the aluminum foil into a bundle. Make sure the bundle is hanging on the side or under the a/c and not in the front of the unit.
  6. If the a/c has a secondary sensor, place it on the foil bundle and hold it firmly using electric tape.
  7. Open a small gap in the frontal part of the fins with a pencil. The opening must be 1 inch from the bottom and close to the middle between the base and the second cooling pipe. Ensure that you only insert about a quarter of the tip of the fins sensor in the gap created.
  8. Take the jumper and mount it on the outer part of the cooler, carefully pacing it in a spot close enough to make it easier for the data cable to join both the coolbot pro and coolbot jumper together. Note: this step is from coolbot that uses wifi.
  9. Turn on the a/c. Put the a/c in COOL mode, and the fan in HIGH speed. Turn off the a/c economy mode setting and put the a/c in its lowest temperature level.
  10. Plug in the power supply of the Coolbot pro.
